  • Quick question - 3.0 si vs. se vs. sport

Morning. I know this is blasphemy but I'm thinking of getting a non-M Z4 Coupé, mainly due to the suspension: I want SE suspension!

So (i) is the si the same as sports or are there 3 variants of non-M?; and (ii) in theory could I retrofit se suspension onto an M? Is it just dampers and springs or is there more to it?

    Thanks!

I think it's mainly just the springs , more ride height than anything else .
I've just sold a z4 roadster that had m sport springs and it was ok ride quality wise , changing to non run flat tyres makes the most difference to the ride and the way it drives , unbelievably so to be honest .

It's as Paul says. Mainly just springs for height and ride quality so upgrading to M type suspension is easy. Most people either Eibach or Koni them of course.

Denomination wise, SI and I just relate to the engine spec. It's then either SPORT or SE for suspension and other spec details on a Z4.

SI was only available after the 2006 facelift.

Brilliant, many thanks chaps. In that case I might get an M and replace the springs with SE ones if I don't like it!

I've owned both a Z4 3.0i SE and 2 x Z4M's. Weirdly the ride was better in the Ms than in the SE.

Interesting insight, thanks. I'll have to spend a bit of time in both then. It's hard to test them meaningfully on a test drive though.

Are there any Z3MC-type major issues? I believe the shell bearings are fine and the chassis was designed properly this time! But is there anything else big to watch? I'm looking for a low stress car really, having come from an MC and then an old Aston which weren't!

Definitely drive as many as you can and find some speed bumps!

Only real issues on the Z4 are the springs as they tend to snap, although it's easy and cheap to remedy. Other than that for the standard engines they're pretty bulletproof. ///M engines if looked after are also good if looked after with the regular Inspections. Check rear exhaust brackets as they can rot pretty easily. Otherwise you're good to go!

If you want an enthusiast car then head over to the Z4Forum.com. Usually a few for sale at regular intervals.

Good luck and if you need any further advice feel free to PM me

Thanks inkey$, that's really helpful. There's a tasty one at ML that I'll go try.
