  • Silver S50 Cat D 68k

    http://www.pistonheads.com/classifie...--1999/3609573

£11.5k and been off the road for 7 years. Looks like a quite large panel gap on the front and standard Z3 headlights.

Minor issues really and could be a great car for someone who's willing to faff around for a couple of hours swapping out the lights and aligning the front.

Mmm , I'm back to riding around in the pick up , but because I've scratched the m coupe itch I'm more interested in the mx5 , it's another bucket list item , rock up at the the ring in a £1500 mx5 and just enjoy it .

My son went to view it a couple of weeks ago.

          Didn't buy it because:
What made it cat d? Wouldn't have thought that a five year old car would be that badly repaired if it was only minor bumper damage.
In 2004 it was only just over 4 years old. It would have been more than a bumper for it to be written off. How much was it still worth then. £20k?
          Overspray under the bonnet
Engine was not particularly healthy sounding, my son had just been driving mine so knew what a good one sounded like
          No service history
Two dealers had already looked at it and walked away.

          Not impressed.

Hi, new to this site - hello all - I was tracking this one and speaking to the owner and previous owner... it was Cat d due to front end damage (as recorded on the MIB database) with the passenger strut, radiator, bumper, bonnet and lights needed replacing. Bearing in mind this was an expensive car at the time I believe the rule of thumb is 60% of value... in which case a max of £12k of damage to the car (including labour and parts for the above list this seems reasonable to w/o from an insurance perspective taking into account; assessment fees, transport, storage and courtesy car and what would be made back via salvage auction).

Speaking to HPI the car was main dealer maintained prior to being written off and showing on the 'EPYX' database (fleet/lease car) as being serviced at the following intervals. Unfortunately the service book has gone as stated above.

                • 23,822 miles recorded on 5 Jan 2004 ( EPYX_BACKDATA , BMW )
                • 16,272 miles recorded on 27 Aug 2003 ( EPYX_BACKDATA , BMW )
                • 15,061 miles recorded on 8 Aug 2003 ( EPYX_BACKDATA , BMW )
                • 7,994 miles recorded on 28 Aug 2002 ( EPYX_BACKDATA , BMW )
                • 7,371 miles recorded on 20 Mar 2002 ( EPYX_BACKDATA , BMW )
                • 3,125 miles recorded on 2 Nov 2000 ( EPYX_BACKDATA , BMW )

The owner who salvaged it runs a salvage garage in Halifax and carried out all the work himself (using OEM parts) and maintained it with 6 monthly oil and filter changes and confirmed no engine block or sub frame damage. I'm in the process of getting a Cat D pre-purchase assessment (using a pit) and arranged a viewing with a fiend (who has previously ran a build thread on his Z3M on the sister site (owned both S50 and S54 roadster variants) - he reckons this is a bargain with the optional extras included like the HK stereo system (is that any good??), moon roof, having all the keys etc. and it's appreciating cult status.

The previous owner (of the garage) has kindly agreed to put together a dossier of what was completed post salvage until last year. The MOT history backs up the mileage since it's been recorded as a Cat D. The garage owner has gone into great detail about the quality of the car, the work completed, the OEM parts used and the fact that it was his own garage queen for a number of years.

The current owner has the owners manual and the receipts for the work he carried out (£700 for a tyre and Blisteins shocks on the front) and the MOT report from last year.

If the pre-purchase inspection reports nothing too untoward my theory is that this is a reasonably sounds investment on the basis that, if 821 RHD S50s were made, and all those on the market currently are either Cat C or Cat D (excluding the auction lots which are going for £18K - £24K) for similar miles then there is a very small pool of cars which haven't been written off (or possibly not recorded like the eBay shells) and will likely have seriously high miles.

Would welcome any thoughts on the research I've conducted and any holes in my theory? Also interested in anyhitng I should look out for and if there are any Cat D owners what their experience has been.

                Cheers

Welcome to the forum , the only thing I would say is the car has a non "M" front bumper and the incorrect front lights so factor in the cost of replacements if you want to take it back to OEM spec

also check the undertrays and brake cooling ducts as these are different on the M and are expensive to replace. Good luck

Hi Dave, thanks for the info and the welcome - I'll look into those parts as suggested... if anyone has these would be interested in talking about prices.

The advert has been taken down as I have put down a (refundable) holding deposit pending the inspection... unfortunately I didn't have the foresight to save the pics down but the engine bay is black... should this ring alarm bells?

If its had front suspension damage then the under bonnet may have been re-sprayed but looks like not to original spec on this car (common on catc/d)

Welcome! From what you're saying it sounds as if the garage that repaired the car are claiming a decent job when it was put back together.

Isn't it a contradiction that they've not used the correct bumper, lights et cetera? Moreover could have done a better job in aligning the panels?

I'm not suggesting that this car could not be a good buy or investment as you say, however, I think the price is too high given the works required to return it to proper spec.

                              Good luck!
