  • Vanos

So finally got time to finish all the bushes and springs in my coupe yesterday. I took it for a lap to make sure there wasn't any knocks etc. Got the bugger home and noticed a horrible noise coming from the vanos area.

Anyone got a link to a good how to for vanos so I can see what I am up against.

M coupe is fighting me every step.

      Hi,

Sorry to hear of your issue (been there experienced that ...).

Please take a look here :

      http://www.beisansystems.com/procedu..._procedure.htm

      http://www.beisansystems.com/procedu..._procedure.htm

That should give you an idea regarding Vanos and its service.

Looked the video and was wondering whether that sound really comes from Vanos ? The infamous Vanos rattle usually developes over time and does not appear suddenly. The suddenly appearing symptoms are usually related to Vanos solenoid seals failing which leads to oils leaks (internal or external) and poor idle and reduced power.

The rattle typically originates from these sprocket hats and those diagraphm springs inside them becoming tired and letting the Vanos axis to rattle inside the camshaft:

But this usually build up during time and does not appear all the sudden.

Take a carefull look if your rattle comes from somewhere else. Something vibrating against another part ?

Not heard of it on a S50 but sounds like a loose timing chain to me.

As above I don't recall hearing of a Vanos unit suddenly failing & making a noise like yours.

That's perfect thanks very much. I have a friend who is a bmw tech. He is coming over tomorrow night for a look at it.

The strange thing is it doesn't do it until it's warmed up for five minutes.

The idle is a bit lumpy but I was thinking that was my MAF as it idles smoother with it unplugged.

Almost sounds like it is the viscous fan catching on the cowling, possibly water pump bearings if so?

I'm with Mike on this one, sounds more like the fan catching on the cowling. Give the propeller a wiggle and see if there's any play in the waterpump bearings.

The engine sounds smooth when revving and the noise only comes in at idle, usually the vanos growls as it comes dowm from say 2000rpm to idle.

As above try the fan, just put a glove on your hand and stop it turning.

                  The fan is solid :-/

Left it idling for 10 -15 mins and all was well. Then one blip of the throttle and it was off again.

Standing by for my mate to visit tonight.

Is the filter clear? (allen key on the front of the vanos unit). What oil is it running? The vanos can sound like this on start up after a rebuild until it gains full pressure.

Filter looks clean enough but there is evidence of a metal part grinding some where.

Unsure of the oil in it as the last service was performed by the previous owner but he is the bmw tech who is coming round tonight. It is almost due a service but tbh the oil looks pretty good.

It will be getting serviced as soon as I can get it MOT'ed haha

Vanos for sure. Exhaust cam is way out of alignment at idle. Spoken to MR Vanos so I am just going to get him to work his magic.

That metal stuff in the Vanos filter looks a bit worrying.

When fixed, please report back here what caused the sudden failure of the Vanos. Was it just related to oil seals or something of more mechanical nature ?

When the oil seals start leaking internally in the Vanos unit, the Vanos contained oil pump cannot any more provide enough oil pressure/flow to shift the timing of the cams. This is usually indicated by rough running at idle but normally without any abnormal mechanical sounds ?

You are lucky to have MR Vanos at your island there Doing the Vanos change DIY is a somewhat challenging job. I checked the cam timing at least five times before I had courage to start the engine first time after installing the new unit.
