noticed today whilst stuck in traffic that my fan did not cick in which it normally does at just over halfe way .i pulled over to check fan and was not working so had to use air con to ceep engine cool.i have been informed that it could be low speed resistor on fan.has anyone had any similar problems cheers jess

Most likely it'll be the viscous coupling on the fan.

thank you for reply but it is the electric fan that has problem the viscos fan is ok .cheers

Does the fan work when the Air Con is on?

yes fan works when aircon is on.am i correct to think it is a resistor on the fan

The electric aircon fan will never cut in unless the temp gauge is 3/4 or even more, which would indicate a problem with the viscous fan. The temp switch is set really high - the electric fan really is just the air con fan. Air con was standard on the M Coupe but option on Z3M Roadsters; there is no electric auxillary fan on those Z3Ms without aircon.

The viscous fan keeps the engine at normal temp especially in traffic and prevents the temp ever going above normal. If it's wandering over high I would say there is a problem with the viscous fan.

So is that why there isn't a fan left running, even on a hot day/hot engine, when the MC is turned off (as in the electric fan isn't to cool the engine)?

Yes it's just an air con fan, it does work well to cool the engine though if you set it like I've done with a lower temp switch (from a 1.9 which don't run viscous fan AFAIK) and also manual switch on the dash (I have used a front and rear fog light switch off a Z3). I've removed the viscous fan though!

Yes mate, don't worry....its normal,,,, for fk sake don't try doing it when everything is hot !!! all sounds normal to me...

ok cheers i will check when hot to see if is spinning any faster,i still dont know why auxillary fan isnt coning on when past the 3/4 mark as it used to.

3/4 mark never had mine passed the 1/2 way....maybe in need of a thermostat,?

mines the same never gets above 1/2, is there a sensor in the side of the radiator that switches the a/c fan on if the viscous doesn't work correctly?

This is what im intrigued about. As after a good blast on a hot day, what cools the engine when parked....

The viscous fan always keeps the coolant in the radiator cool, so if you are idling/parking up the radiator is always being cooled by the spinning fan. Whereas on a car without one, the radiator will be steadily getting hot and may trigger an electric fan after shutdown.

If you're temp gauge is going over 3/4 there's something wrong with thecoolant system and/or the viscous fan (maybe it's not locking as it should which meansas the revs rise the fan speed picks up to similar speeds).
