  • Becker headunit with ipod and bluetooth install

Wanted to upgrade my headunit as the original BMW one is probably without doubt the worst sounding radio I have ever heard. So with the intention of maintaining a bit of a OEM appearance I went for this.

BECKER GRAND PRIX WITH RED / ORANGE DISPLAY.

So here is what the horrid sounding original looked like…

    A side by side comparison…

Plug and play with a standard ISO connector for the non HK system.

Channel the wires through to the glove box for the IPOD lead…

    Ipod in the glove box…

Microphone wire under steering column and up behind A pillar trim

Nice neat finish with mic velcro’d on

    And there we are…

Head unit with ID3 tags attached:

Even with the original speakers the system sounds excellent IMO. The integration with the Bluetooth is faultless and the IPOD connectivity is surprisingly perfect (even with all of the ID3 song info).

So, I’m a happy chappy. Thanks for looking.

I've got a Becker Mexico Pro in mine which looks exactly like that GP model. The sound quality of CDs to me is the same as the BMW headunit (listening to CDs through changer) in that its a little bit to flat/harsh for me. I wonder if the Ipod makes a difference though as they tend to make most tracks have a very nice rich, warm sound.

Good choice, I have the same head unit :)

I found I had a lot of distortion with the old business RDS when volume was turned up loud, and thought the speakers were at fault (HK), but after I changed to the Becker, it disappeared. Not sure if this was because the headunit was dodgy or if they're all like that !

my original kept eating cds, eventually had to take it out and unscrew it to get a cd out. I like that OEM look, I went for the http://caraudiosecurity.com/shop/pro...s_id/5777.html
as it has an interface identical to ipod and a wheel the same as your ipod, i just don't like the bright blue look compared to all the OEM orange red dials.

That looks excellent... after sticking in that Apline unit last week it just doesn't LOOK right so may get hold of one of the Becker units, here's the alpine I fitted:

On that Becker unit, how good is the iPod control? Does the headunit allow full selection of the iPod or do you have to use the iPod direclty? Also, does the cable CHARGE the iPod while it's plugged in as well?

John, that's the reason I didn't fit my old Kenwood; it just didn't look right in the dash, being silver and too many bright colours etc. I would prefer the sound and adjustment of the Kenwood but with the looks of the Becker though!!

If you do get one, get it in Red illumination (I found yellow to be too yellow and red's a better match for the rest of the intruments)

I actually think with the Estoril Blue car / interior you can pull the Alpine off. For me it really would look out of place because I have the boring black interior.

              One word...

              Perfect.

It really does exactly what it should / says on the tin.

I have the same Alpine unit as Jonmurgie and it looks pretty good with orange backlights. However, I made a big mistake going for the 'glide touch' bar instead of buttons and am now looking at buying the one alex_mcoupe has given that I never carry CDs in the car anymore and quite fancy the easy interface.

Excellent, does it does charge it as well?

Your right about the Alpine not looking TOO out of place what with the blue illumination and the silver bits that do kind of go with the dash... do quite like the idea of the hands-free phone stuff it can deal with too!

Oh, and Deep Porn... just a song title I think, no idea what as I hardly know 50% of what's on the iPod at any given moment!!

                      Is this what you're after?

                      £100 seems steep though!!!!

Definitely think trying to stick as close to OEM as possible on the headunit is the right way to go though. It can all clash a bit if you're going to get the bright coloured units with silver finish!!!

Sure does. In fact my knackered 40gb ipod is perfect for the car as the battery is shot anyway so it will just stay permantly plugged in.
