  • Warning Light

An orange warning light came on for a couple of days last week - the "engine" one. Looked in the handbook and it says emissions are outside limits (something like that) - recommends have checked by BMW dealer.

Had used the car gently for the couple of days, running around local only.

Then had 150 mile drive on motorways and light went out, and stayed out.

Guess needed something heating up fully or blowing through.

Wondering if this has happened to others?

The car (likely many things) is best when regularily used as intended.

Hi Ian, I had the same problem recently, Mine does get used on some short runs and I've noticed it splutter once or twice.
After a few long runs the light would go out.
My Indy plugged the diags in and saw that it had registered lots of misfires across most of the cylinders.
Anyway, my car was still on its original set of spark plugs after nearly 24,000 miles and nearly due an Insp 1, I had the Insp 1 carried out including a set of new plugs (an eye watering £100 worth of plugs!) and its been fine so far, no more splutters or engine light.
The indy did say that the plugs were pretty dirty and sooty, not helped by short runs.

Since new Supersprint exhaust/cat fitted, mine is on permanently. Just ignore it.

Thanks Mags. Problem has not returned since. Seems like a case of "too much information" from the car.

Not sure its a good idea just to ignore though Coupe fan, especially given your mods - is a sensor missing/disconected? Could affect engine management?

Everything checked and reset twice. Still comes back on. Means exhaust info is not what the computer wants, and I know the reason for that.

So what happens if there's a genuine problem that you're ignoring?

Looks like I've tempted fate here, I had a good run on Friday and then parked up for an hour, got back in the car, drove 200 yards to a junction and as I slowed to a halt and put the clutch in she stalled, on re-start the light came back on, D'oh!
I called my indy this morning and I'm taking her back to see him to get plugged up to the diags again to see what's occuring.

Going a little off topic on this now, he was concerned by the weight of the oil in the car that would have been put in by the last BMW dealers that serviced the car, he thought it was way too thick and heavy for these engines (S54)
The diags also showed up a couple of odd errors along the lines of valve timing errors so it will be interesting to see what she shows tomorrow after having these cleared down last time. I've only travelled a couple of hundred miles since the Insp 1.
He also had some struggles getting the diags to recognise the car as the S54's still run the 'old' style round diag plugs but the newer engine looms found in the S54 M3's etc. Once he had manually told the diags what the car was it was fine but wondered if anyone else had come across this?
If we don't have much luck tomorrow he wants me to visit a friend of his that has a much bigger/smarter diags kit that cost him a small fortune to see if this reveals more.
Fingers crossed is something simple like coils etc, I have a Warranty direct direct warranty but I'm hoping I don't have to exercise it!

I'm also booked to take the car to the Car Limits course at North Weald on Monday, I really need it to be in full health or I may have to reconsider taking it in case some thing nasty happens that buggers the engine.
The whole point of the driving day was to learn how to handle this beasty! I'll be sick if I have to take someting else :(

Edited to add I might be talking rubbish on the diags side but I'll clear it up tomorrow. I trust my indy, he has a very good reputation but I am a little worried that he may not be getting the right info from the diags and I really don't want to have to resort to a stealer as I'm sure even if its a simple fix I'll get striped by them.
He was talkign about similar problems with X5's I think, he said BMW america are mixing old and new components making trouble shooting a PITA.

What oil was put in it? I assume it's 10/60 which is what BMW specifies for the S54 M3 and the V8 M5 engines.

Garage says remapping will readjust everything so will put up with it until that's done. Diagnostics said 'Catalyst system efficiency (Bank 1) Limit exceeded' and the same for Bank 2.

Had the car plugged into the diags this morning, 3 camshaft Vanos timing issues were logged, I should have written them down but didn't. The mechanic had written them down from last time and they were the same 3 errors from before he did the Insp 1 a couple of weeks ago.
He is going to speak to a friend before coming back to me but initially thinks it may be just a faulty camshaft sensor.
My only concern on this is if this could cause the car to stall as it did last week but I'll wait for him to come back to me.

The oil should have been TWS 10/60 but as this is NLA he used a Valvoline Synthetic 5/50 I beleive it was.

Yes, new camshaft sensor going in tomorrow, roughly £60 from BMW though! I'll have to see if my Warranty covers this.
He's lent me an old 1502 to run about in, I like it!

Anyways, Ian. Get it checked out, its worth getting the errors read, but if the light has gone out its can't be serious.

                        Mags,
You say that the TWS is no longer available, what leads you to this conclusion.
I can get hold of as much as you like, and I'm sure other people can as well.
My car is no longer under warranty but I am still using the oil that BMW specify just in case anything were to go wrong, don't want to give them a "get out " clause.

Castrol TWS 10/60 is now called Castrol Edge 10/60 [for M Series engines].

You can still get castrol TWS 10W/60.

As CW said, its been renamed now.
I wasn't too clear here, My indy used to be a Castrol agent but Castrol have decided to make the minimum order level massive and its beyond his reach so he uses Valvoline instead.
I'll checkout the Castrol Edge though as I'd rather stick with BMW's recommendations just in case of any Warranty issues.
