      Damien,
Manty went there this year and had to abandon his plans to take his S54 due to Aussie protectionism - sorry, their totally proper rules and regulations. Here's link to his thread

There is another thread about the true cost of an import - do a search.

If I was going, I would take the most expensive, exclusive car I could get my hands on, just to p*ss them off.

I thought that I was being rather tame in my comments there - no expletives - even chucked in a * to tone it down a bit.

Monsieur Blonde, read the previous threads on this. If you are a long term resident/native then you are probably unaware of the Aussie govt's car import policy because your media do not widely publicise it.

Up to 10 years ago, the Aussie touring car championship was open to all makes. Then the japs (Nissan GTR) and others were making the domestic cars look like jalopies so they excluded them all.
It's now a joke 2 make series with virtually identical cars.

Ford/Holden also determine the the car tax policy (in cahoots with both political parties) and is amended annually to just exclude their top end version cars. Their car production figures per man are so low it is like going back to the 1970s here in Britain. Totally unionised and out of touch with the rest of the world.
But add 65-100% to the cost of all imports then you make your cars price competitive. It's pathetic and just a bit sad from a nation that prides itself on being so aggressive and competitive.

Never truer words spoken. It is an absolute farce.

Not to go too far OT, but there is a weird cultural phenomenon in Oz/NZ, where people (particularly rural types in small towns) define themselves as either a "Holden" or a "Ford" 'Man' and won't hear a word spoken against their chosen brand,. To them, supporters of the other brand are on par with kiddy fiddlers, and they often wear t-shirts with idiotic slogans emblazoned on them (usually stretched across a bulging beer gut).

Lived in and worked in and been to a lot of places but never seen anything like it anywhere else in the world. Just odd.

Agreed - another form of pointless tribalism, which one might think was fading away in advanced first world societies, but not down under.

Think of the worst aspects of good ole southern Alabama boy 'culture' and you have just about got it.

I don't know anyone who owns a Ford or a Holden but I'm sure you're right. As for import protectionism, are you sure the UK doesn't prop up any industries with ridiculous import taxes?

Take it with you. At least you will have it when you return.

I took a special MG with me in the 1990s with out too much pain.

Also brought back a car in the early 2000s.

The place is culturally desert - that's why all their attention is given to sport.

Have fun 'till the gloss wears off.

Didn't someone on here recently ship their MC out to Oz in parts to avoid the duty? Had to arrive in multiple containers I think.

...i would definately take it ...there is a fantastic ctuning & classic car scene in Oz, despite the partisan Ford/Holden thing, also some awesome roads -- easily on a par with "Trial Mountain" !!!! ...just watch out for the speed cops (draconian, esp. in Victoria)
