  • A sound like marbles rolling, coming from the rear!!!

In the past month I've been noticing a sound like marbles rolling, coming from the rear!!!

Usually when driving slow or when letting the car go slow but of the throttle...
I've checked today for any loss parts and decided to empty the car of most of the tools on the tool kit and isolate the tool kit (it is made of plastic maybe it it vibrating)...

I will see how it goes latter in the day when I drive the beast again...but if you guys have had this sound or know what it could be, please share you thoughts.

    Thanks
    Paulo

    Hi Paulo ,

I could be the handbrake shoes catching inside the drum.

Try rolling slowly and gently touch the handbrake on and off and see if the noise changes / goes away for a bit.

Then give it a strip down.

OK. I see your idea. I will try that later...

The sound could also be a clunking rattle...when accelerating I do not hear it but when driving slow and on roads that are less the perfect, it is there.

Could it be the rear top mounts? If so, how soon should I change them? (asking this because if doing so I will get Rogue Top Mounts...just don't know yet how or where, since I'm based in Portugal).

If it ends being the top mounts, is this what I need?

          http://www.rogueengineering.com/Merc...ategory_Code=S

and do I need "12mm race shocks"? and "Extra Bushings"?

I had some really annoying squeaks and rattles coming from the back of my car and I really was starting to worry that it could be something serious. IT turned out that I just needed to wind the rubber tailgate stops out a couple of turns to stop it moving.

I will look into the OEM Rear Shock Mounts in the weekend (I hope)...
My question is: Is there only Rogue as the alternative? Or are there other aftermarket manufacturers based in Europe that sell the parts?

(I've talked to HugoGT, he posts here and he had the same issue and it ended up being the Top Mounts...)

I've found a solution for the parts with the help of Imran...so what I need is just to confirm if indeed the OEM SM are damaged!!!

Here's a useful article on replacing the top mounts:

                      http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pdw/mcoupe/rsm.html

From memory the broken top mounts make an odd squeaking rattling sound which doesn't seem to coincide with driving over bumps - and as you say is noticeable at slow speeds, eg when parking. I think that's probably what your problem is.

if you can get a view of the top of the mount (looking into boot, after removing the 25 million bits of carpet) you should be able to see free movement if an assistant grabs the shock in the wheel arch and attempts to push/pull it.
"If everything seems under control, you're just not going fast enough."

Thank you for the input...I was going to change the Rear Shock Mounts anyway...so I might as well do it sooner than later.

I had my top mounts replaced the other week - cured an annoying rattle/knocking sound even though the old mounts looked to be in good condition. Worth doing

3hrs labour and the cost of the mounts. All in was about £250 or so.

                              Merry Xmas everyone
