  • What oil does the S50 like?

    Hi Guys,

about to book car in for Inspection 2 which is due asap as last green light just went off.

What oil does the S50 engine like best? or what do you guys use? or should i just stick to the regular service manual stuff.

I only ask as I'm sure i've read some people using 5/30, 10/60 or 10/40?? somewhere...

I've just ordered 10 litres of Silkolene Pro S 5w/40 from Opie oils as they had a deal on. It's a highly regarded oil by most in the business.

Most of the Evo boys who know their stuff use 5w40 or 10w40 in their S50s.

I too would plump for the Silkolene Pro S fully synthetic - I've only heard great things.

If in doubt, call up Opie for a chat.

I've currently got Silkolene Pro S 5/40 in mine but for the past 3 years used Castrol Edge 10/60 for M Series. With the Castrol mine sounds a little smoother on cold-starts.

I filled with Silkolene for over winter months and will use the Castrol in summer (changing oil next month).

Not as far as I am aware. I've always been told by my specialist that 10w60 was recommended for the S50 as soon as it became available. I've always used it with no problems (except for the price )

Same here. Isn't 10/60 the standard for the M Coupe?

Actually I thought 10w60 was more suited to E46 ///M engines. I am probably mistaken, but the most common by far that I have read about after years on the E36 M3 forums is 5 or 10w40; generally only the track boys who have long periods at very high temperatures use the 10w60.

I use Motul 300V endurance racing oil.

I switch between 5/40 and 15/50 winter and summer. I started using it when i had my tuned Subaru as lots of cars were 'lunching' No3 bearing and the Motul has the highest shearing strength available which helps reduce the chance of failure due to 'dry spotting'.

I will be doing the odd trackday this year, would you still recommend using this even tho not all of my driving will be done on the track? Reason i ask is that i might be able to get a discount on motul oils as my friend works for pace products who are a dealer for motul.

                          Motul 5/40 gets my recommendation.

My indie researched this in great depth and is happy for this all year round as I'm not planning to track.

My old 330ci used to drink a litre of oil every 1000 miles, so I decided to go down the motul 300v route (5-30), very pleased with it as the car ran smoother and consumption went down to a litre every 2000 miles...
