Default M135i

Now this is a car that I would love to own, despite the horrendous front end. Has anyone caught the article in the September issue of BMW car? That's an impressive endorsement.

There was one on show at Silverstone in the AA area.

I thought it looked a bit naff and I like the new shaped 1 series as well.

It does not help when I cringe at the site of a non ///M car with an ///M badge on the rear and now BMW are doing it again, oh well cheapening the brand so I'm closer to being able to fit one on my Msport

Yea, I get all the cheapening the brand stuff, but actually the newer M cars seem pretty much useless on real roads - for example the 1M is so skittish it's slow and actually quite dangerous on real roads.

I might try to test drive one of these, but the review said it's basically only a few hp down on the 1M, but is soft enough that it's actually faster in real driving.

It seems to me like the new Ms are for all the 'billy big balls' out there, who just want to brag about power and 'ring times, whereas this might actually be a better drivers car.

My 535d Msport if a better drivers car than most on the road, especially compared to equivalent mercs etc.... but its no ///M car. In everyday driving its probably as quick as my ///M but its no where near as much fun and on the twisties it would be left dead.

Any big engine in a 1 series would be fast in a straight line, I'm just not sure / can't see how it would be real fun on the twisties as the suspension and brakes would be just too soft as that is exactly the market its aimed at. If thats what your after I would save yourself a few quid and get the torquey diesel ;-)

I think the softness is the point - there are few corners in the UK not accompanied by a bl00dy great pothole of poorly fitted manhole cover, which send an M car straight into a sketchy bounce-fest at anything like real speed. Softer is a better and safer drive on our roads, unfortunately.
