  • Idle Problems

    Hi all,

I've been having some issues with a strange Idle for a while now and thought it would be good to ask for some advice.

Basically my Coupe drives excellently and never seems to miss a beat. After owning it for about 6 months however, I started to notice the Idle moving up and down between 600 and 1200 rpm when I'm stopped (obviously I mainly notice this at lights) . It seems totally random as in I could be at lights sitting at 1100, pull off and stop and the next set and it settles at 800 and on some drives I don't notice it at all.

I took the car down to Mjf engineering a couple of weeks ago who gave it a good going over and decided to reset the computer system. On my first drive, the difference was incredible as it was idling perfect and also the power felt more consistent when driving (not that I'd noticed any issue before). Second time I got in the car and the problem is back and if anything seems more noticeable eg. the car has stalled on one occasion when stopping and putting into reverse to park.

Appreciate this could be caused by quite a few different things but wondering if anyone has had a similar problem? The car has 88k on the clock and had inspection 1 around 1000 miles ago, again at Mjf.

    Thanks in advance.

I think that idle problems are usually caused by an issue with the idle control valve. As far as I'm aware this can either be cleaned out or replaced

Thanks both. I'll probably try replacing the cable actually as the accelerator pedal doesn't have the smoothest action.

On MJF, I've been more than happy with them every time I've taken the car there, lovely guys and know their stuff. I realise my OP reads a bit like I'm blaming them, which was unintended.

Kwoffa, it was myself that bumped into you down that direction a couple of months ago.

My idle problem was varying revs, sounding rough and was far worse when warm. Turned out to be the Vanos at fault on the exhaust side. Mr Vanos replaced Vanos and now 100%.

Didn't notice any other issue, performance seemed fine. That is until I compare to what it is now.
