Oh, pretty lucky to stay at home and play with cars all day too
Seriously, I'm only as good as the people that put their trust in me, but thank you all the same.

Hi all,
I have been a Z3 Coupe 1999 owner for 9 years and have periodically checked on this forum for great advice on fixes to problems. However it is only now i have registered as a user and posted!!
Unfortunately i think i have the dreaded sub-frame problem. The car has been rattling lately and took it to the garage for a check up and has found various cracks in the boot/sub frame (see pictures).
I am no expert so would appreciate your thoughts/comments on the pictures. If it is as bad as i suspect i assume i will need to go the full hog and get a kit fitted. I plan on keeping the coupe for a while (forever?) and so i don't want a quick fix that will come back to haunt me in a few years.
I spoke to the guys at Redish Motorsport and they do not have a kit for the Z3, and recommended Randy as the only kit they have come across.
Randy - if you are reading this could you let me know costs/shipping costs to Northern Ireland/timings to ship/ amount of welding time i need to buy etc......
To be fair the Coupe has given me 9 years of pretty much cheap driving and no major issues (brake caliper, fan, other small bits) but i think this might be the big one $$$$$$$..........

So I finally got the kit from Randy (took 3 days to get from California and then 8 days sitting in UK customs!).
The first two welders i approached refused to touch the car - but I found a good indy classic car / rally car garage who were happy to take on the job. Once the car was on a ramp and the exhaust removed it showed the extent of the damage. What a mess! Looks like it had been cracked for a while and the cracked metal had been rubbing against each other weakening it further so the patch up welding was quite extensive.
All done now and feels sooooo much better and solid with no rattling and banging. Pictures below.... and hopefully a good job done for the life of the car!!

To the best of my knowledge, nobody has ever had to go back in and repeat, or shore up the reinforcement installation, and there are cars out there exceeding 650 RWHP, plus a few Chevrolet LS# V8 engine swaps (very torquey motors, those).
Trust me when I say you've put any of that sort of worry behind you!
Thank you for your business, and for posting up pictures of the resulting work! Incidentally, you had the same experience that most find here in the US too; a lot of shops don't want to touch it, and those that are willing are typically eager to do so. Very funny, but it's with like-minded enthusiasts where one stands the greatest chance of getting the job done.

Randy - thanks for all your help, advise and the kit! it was an absolute pleasure to deal with you and highly recommend for any other members who have the same sub frame / boot issue.
The garage i used loved the Z3M and hadn't seen one in years - but they were pretty experienced in restoration and more than happy to tackle the job - attached some pics of other projects they have underway....

Hey Randy,
I have been meaning to update you and the forum with the outcome of your brace kit installation, but due to mapping delays I haven't covered any miles since completion.
James of JTH Performance who does all our prep work including numerous modifications to my Coupe was thankfully excited to take on the job. This is no small job. As an example specialists Reddish said to me they have never repaired the boot floor of a coupe and gave me the impression they didn't really want to do it either, comparing the task to open heart surgery. James took his time (25 hours) applying his usual high standard of attention to detail producing some neat finishing.
From my day one some 13k miles ago I have known of a couple of very small cracks around the NS seems. At this point I swapped all the aged bushes for new poly bushes. Also adding KW suspension and H&R roll bars. With constant monitoring these cracks didn't appear any worse. With the supercharger now upping the power I wasn't willing to take the risk of the boot floor getting worse.
The kits additional brace and supports are hidden from the eye meaning the results are felt rather than seen. Immediately the first drive was so much better than I anticipated. The rear is absolutely solid communicating a feeling that the car moves as one. Turn in is razor sharp encouraging quicker corning speeds and all round greater confidence. I couldn't be happier.
All in all this is quite costly to carry out, which is shame, but it is what it is, but I really did need to do it. Peter another Coupe owner from the forum met Randy in the US and brought an extra kit back with him which I bought off him saving me a few pounds on import duty.
A few photos of what was done.
Thanks Randy!

I'm glad you're happy with the results! Twenty-five (25) hours is a little quicker than I do them, but that comes down to me taking a bit more of the car apart, to give me more access for prep & painting.
As you say, the prize is in the driving, not the looks, because hardly anyone will ever peek under its skirt!
