  • Rear Top Mounts

So I decided that the ugly thumping noise at the back whenever hitting a bump needed to be investigated. And with the guidance of the brilliant forum article on how to replace rear suspension top mounts (http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pdw/mcoupe/rsm.html), I set about removing the boot trim.
    Didn't look too healthy...

On removing the damper, the full extent of the deterioration became clear!

So I set about installing the new one ...

    ...and the final result...

Near side one was easier and not so badly deteriorated. What a difference to the ride! Just been for a blast up to Tyndrum for lunch - it's like a new car!

Good opportunity to check the state of the shock absorbers and rear boot floor as well.

Next job's an oil and filter change, followed by handbrake cable. I might even look at some preventative maintenance on the VANOS with a MrVanos seal kit.

Overall the rear mounts are a fairly straightforward job. Just a bit time consuming. But so worth while - a huge improvement for very little effort and cost. Now, how it got through the last MOT...

Can't see the photos as they are being linked to your local hard drive!

I think with MOTs they rarely test dampers these days, and only take notice of them if they are leaking. Similarly detecting a failing top mount is difficult on a static test.

Shame I didn't know. I went up for a run across to Oban yesterday and was in tyndrum. Just love the run from tyndrum to dalmally........

It was still very busy but the food at The Real Food Cafe was worth it!
I also like the Oban Dalmally road - a grand day out. I like to do the circular route back through Inverary.
The car ran beautifully. I never have music playing when I'm driving the coupe, but I always do in my other cars!

Wow, never seen rusty top mounts like that! Always best to make sure there is a new gasket and/or add a bead of silicone on the mount before you bring it up to the car should provide a weather seal.

Having said that I've never had a rear mount fail, despite them being apparently prone to (across BMW cars in general). The only time I've seen one fail where the damper comes through the car is when the domed washers were fitted the wrong way.

Yes it was terrible. Nearside was ok though. Not sure what could account for the difference. All the other suspension bushes and dampers looked and felt fine.
And yes I used new gaskets so rear end is sorted now.
