I was wondering this the other day as I could do with a new one!

Since I have my hatch panel off I can definitely confirm whatever keeps it in place doesn't go all the way through to the inside.

Looks like it sticks and has two lugs for position, 51147721222

Same fitting as the front IIRC. A bit of a random size on the boot, only fitted to the Z1 and M Coupe (70mm) (edit and BMW motorbikes!!), so you can't buy an ebay special for it like you can the front (ebay badges I have to say have been very good quality IME, if not better than genuine considering how the original badges have a habit of delaminating).

Picked up a rear badge or "plaque" as BMW call it from my dealers today and unlike the front it does stick and doesn't require new grommets

Bought new ones from BMW when I got the car (due to fading), think they were about £7. Laquered them to protect the red stripe and they are still as good as new!
