  • S54 ticking noise (vids included)

    Hi people,

    I recently bought a Z3M with 46k on the clock, its a Jan02 build

When i pulled up this evening i heard a ticking noise which didnt sound right. I've literally had the car for a few weeks so not sure if its normal or if its developed since i purchased it.

What i have noticed is it seems to disappear at certain revs and be quite clear at others. It definately increases in speed with the engine. The sound is coming from the middle left of the rocker cover or the left hand side of the block

Any idea what this could be? could it be early signs of bearing shell failure?(been doing alot reading on this recently so i'm probably looking for faults!)should i even be driving it??? It still feels healthy to drive, no lack of power/lumpy idle etc..

Here's the vids, first at idle then one at different revs. You can quite clearly hear the noise.

    26secs in the most:

and at 24secs in different revs:

Hi Si thanks for the reply. The only thing is the article says between 2800-3300 rpm whereas this is audible at 1k when idling? does yours make the same noise?

It's tough to say from the video, but I think mine sounds similar.

Can you hear it when you are driving along or just when stationary?

Probably a smart move top get a specialist to at least have a listen

They can make a noise if the valve clearances are out. Its a ticking noise that rises and falls with the revs.

When was the last service Shantybeater? After a couple of weeks of getting used to mine I started getting concerned by noises I'd not picked up on on the test drive and opted to get an early oil service and diagnostics computer plugged in at same time for peace of mind.

I have been here beleive me....if and i do mean if it was the bottom end You would know it as the noise does come from the bottom of the engine,,,i have just had my Vanos replaced and has made everything really quiet(s50) and i can definatly hear a ticking noise..when i put my ear on the injectors i find its them....i would definatly give it an oil change...and then see whats what..the video is dificult to say but generally it doesnt sound bad..

                Thanks for all the responses

Siwilson - I can hear it when on the move. I'm planning on getting it looked at by my BMW specialist tonight for piece of mind

MGR - It does rise and fall with the revs. But according to the service book it had an inspection II (with valve clearances) at BMW around 7k miles/2 years ago

Yadi - The last oil service was 2k miles ago but this is coming up to a year ago. Could the oil be 'stale'?

Kwoffa - I'll get it changed asap

Does it change in pitch or frequency with revs?

I think I know what you mean - I've had the same since I got mine 5 years ago and it hasn't blown up yet.

Certainly not the nicest idling sound, but M cars never have been afaik.

If it doesn't sound right and it's a new noise, then it's clear something has happened to create that noise . A healthy S54 engine doesn't make any strange noises. Listening to sound recordings from videos isn't the same as hearing an engine 'live" so I'm not going to speculate what the problem is (although my diagnosis can be found inside a sealed envelope!), but your engine sounds sick. Get a good mechanic to look at it for you before the problem gets worse. The 1st video shows all 5 green lights on, so the car has been recently serviced.

FYI, my S54 engine with 31k miles was running beautifully until, without any prior early warning noises, the bearing shell on cylinder 5 was bust.

Exdos - Unfortunately I only purchased the car a few weeks back so this was the first time I opened the bonnet whilst the engine was running since i viewed the car. I recall hearing a slight ticking noise then but not sure if it has got any worse. It may very well have been there all along.

Also the car was serviced 2k miles ago (thats why i have 5 green lights) but this is getting on to a year ago now - the owner has barely used it since. I'll definately be dropping in to my BMW specialist on the way home for a diagnosis.

Regardless of the noise i'm considering forking out for a bearing shell replacement now just to ease my mind, can someone clarify exactly what parts i require and a good place to get them? i know you mentioed ARP bolts as well exdos, does this add alot more labour? i also heard the oil pump may have been recalled so i should probably do this too? I assume the oil needs to be emptied out anyway so maybe I could do the oil service at the same time?

All in what can i expect to pay for this?

I don't think any of the S54 and S50 engines I've had in various M's (or one's I've listened to) have been without some noise/ticking ... IMHO they sound quite "mechanical" as you might expect with the the 100bhp/litre+ they produce, they are certainly not as quiet and turbine like as the M54 engine I had in my Z4...anyhow hope it's not serious.

I've been informed by the head of service at my local BMW stealers that the BMW service indicator system takes account of everything to do with the engine irrespective of relatively low-usage. If the engine needs servicing then the indicators should calculate this. So only 2k miles in the last 12 months is within normality for the servicing

The ARP bolts replace the OEM con-rod bolts and these need to be undone to replace the bearing shells, so it's part of the job. From what I've heard from others who've had their BS replaced as a preventative measure, they've been paying £500-600 at Indy garages.

Yep i paid £615 (S50) last year for BS replacement, after 1000 miles (running in) i had the oil changed again probably overkill but why not.

                            Regards Matt.
