  • BMW warning

Just a bit of advice to fellow BMW. Fans
    Anyone looking at buying a 120d 320d or 520d
As a 2nd car or for the wife
    DONT
Sons had 9 in over the last month
With snapped timing chains or cranks

These have varied from 2013 to 2007
    Obviously out of warranty
    But have had differing miles
    Lowest 38k highest 149k
    All have decent service history
    And not old dogs
Asking about there renowned for it
Had a few which have spun the big ends too
Obviously can be rebuilt but for me I would stay well. Lear
Feel free to share with anyone else

    Hi Marv

Had these cars had the recall from bmw? Usually involves changing the tensioner to prevent it snapping, and if the chain is too stretched they take the engine out and replace. I had the tensioner done on my 123d

My son had a 1 series120d sport the 163 bhp version, same happened to him BMW were not intereted im afraid, he sold it to a dealer for £2000 less than retail, only way he could get rid off it.
What a stupid design the sprocket for the timing chain is welded to the cam shaft, and its at the rear of the engine.
I beleive this configuration was later changed by BMW
