  • Grrr. Gravel noise?

So the unscheduled oil service took place today. Booking in again in a fortnight to sort the rear suspension mounts (set of Rogue Engineering replacements in possession already) but noticed driving yesterday that there's a loose gravel noise going on.

Not in the dreaded Vanos sense - it's not a mechanical noise and a couple of drive pasts in a supermarket car park and the noise isn't there. Bumpy road it is. I currently park the car on a gravel drive and I'm thinking it's gravel somehow caught under the car somewhere. Given the oil change I'm guessing it wasn't the undertray at the front. Anyone else had similar? I sometimes find bits caught in the back of the wheel arch so maybe i've got somegot through into the sills?

could it be behind a brake disc rubbing on a back plate?

Thing is it's more of a rattling peas in a can sort of noise ( doesnt sound like rubbing) and only happens in bumpier stretches of road.

Pads can rattle if the retaining clip has come off. Try pressing the brakes lightly and see fi the rattle goes away.

Also raise the handbrake up a bit whilst moving and see if it stops.

          +1 ^^ worth a try......

My CL rear pads rattled down bumpy lanes and drove me mad. Aftermarket pads are sometimes slightly different sizes and have no or crappy clips. My fronts had to have the tabs bent to stop an annoying clonk on application.

Same here. The awful Green Stuff pads I had once did that with the clip in place.

Thanks chaps - I'd forgotten about the handbrake one. Will mention it's still there again when the car goes in for the rear suspension mounts.

By way of an update I think c_w got this one with the handbrake lift check. Does seem to stop the noise when applying a little lift of the handle.

Can someone remind me, is this just a case of a loose retaining clip or similar under the car?

                Cheers

It comes and goes on mine, sometimes lifting the handbrake and then off stops the rattle for a while. Can only think it's the shoes a little loose in the drum??

At the moment my rear pads rattle a LOT as there's no spring clip on the caliper side.

Yadi, i put mine away for the winter last year with the exact noise and problem, lift the hand brake and it went.
Id been using it on weekends thinking it was just a loose rear pad and could wait.
Anyway 3weeks ago i booked it in to a1 bmw specialist because it started really grinding and got a massive bang asif something had got caught up in the rear hand brake shoes.
When taken apart the fucked shoes had battered the inside of the drum part of the rear disks and had worn some parts away aswell.
The rear guard plates were shot to bits aswell just from age so i had those replaced aswell which involved replacing the rear wheel bearings aswell.
So in all 2x wheel bearing 2x back plates 2xdisks & pads and hand brake assembly =£720
The fellas there said that they were that worn that the rears could have locked up at any point, so id get it sorted sooner rather than later mate

Thanks mate. Luckily I'm not car dependant for day to day life. Will get it checked in somewhere shortly for a look at the whole hand brake looked over.
