  • Advice on how much to pay for a black M coupe

    Hi Guys,

I'm looking for my next car so I thought I would register on the forum to ask for your opinions, as I am considering a z3m coupe.

Just some background first; I'm looking for a 'weekend car' rather than a daily driver, that I can drive on the road and which will be exciting to drive.
Unfortunately, I don't have the time to take the car on the track, so ultimate performance from the car isn't my objective, rather driving fun.

I have just sold my elise 111r sport racer, which to be honest I didn't really enjoy, and before that I had a caterham r400 which was super, albeit
just a little on the impractical side

So now I'm thinking about trying to find a black, z3m coupe, low mileage (less than 50,000 miles), unmodified, in very good condition.

I seem to remember that the later models had traction control, which is important to me, because having had an E46 M3 a long time ago, I realised
that I'm not Lewis Hamilton :)

Can anyone give me a guide on how much I should be looking to pay for a car with the specification above? In terms of the price, I'm thinking of private sale
prices rather than from a dealer.

All comments and thoughts appreciated :)

    Cheers, Ed.

    Welcome to the forum

Traction control and less than 50k miles, a good S54 in black then.

You might be looking for a while!! If one comes up...£16k t0 £20k?

    Good luck with your search!

That price range is pretty much what I expected.... out of interest, is there any way of finding out how many S54 cars where made in RHD, in black, just to get an idea of how big the pool of potenial cars I am at?

      Cheers, Ed.

I think anyone looking for a specific colour of S54 is automatically really narrowing their search and has to be prepared to wait.

You could get an S50 and have racelogic traction control fitted which is a proven solution and still availalble (at least it was a couple of years ago when I looked into having it fitted to my S50 roady).

It is also possible to compile a database of all S54 RHD coupes (I'm surprised no one has done this). It is a manual process but I did it for the roady's in a day and so it should be feasible for the coupes in twice the time (As there are twice as many to compile).
You basically need to know the VIN range for the RHD S54's and then use BMW's online database to extract the data of full spec by car.

I did it here for the roady's:

        http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewt...34517&p=322514

Of course that will only tell you how many where made and not how many are still available ;-)

Further to jonttt's post; i'm of the understanding that there are/were 8 UK RHD Black S54s... so a small pool!
The M Coupe ... For those who understand, no explanation is needed. For those who do not understand, no explanation is possible.

          Now ... S54: Sapphire Black/Black-Black/HK+6/Cruise/Sun Roof/H~Lamp wash///ACS Road Suspension/Rogue Engineering rear top mounts/Braided clutch hose
          RIP ... S50: Artic Silver/Black-Grey/HK+6/Cruise/Side 'bags/Grad Tint///ACS Short Shift/Strong Strut/K&N/HIDs & Angels

i have 'some' details of (some) S54's stored, obtained through adverts for sale, from the forums etc, and cars i was interested to buy when originally looking.

i am willing to set up a register for the S54's, and eventually S50's.

its not a great deal likely that many (any?) will have 50k or less too

cant be too fussy since UK only got something like 125 S54's in the first place. rest of them ended up in other countries (like south africa etc) and sure that some have been written off + some exported too.

Crikey.. only 8 S54, UK cars in black...

I can understand now the advice to perhaps be a little less prescriptive on the specification that I was looking for :)

Out of interest, in terms of how exciting the car is to drive, I presume that the engine sound and the 'rasp' will be very similar to the E46 m3 (which I thought sounded very good)?

Any the key question, although I know this is difficult to define, does it feel 'special' when driving it on the open road?

Thanks again for your inputs and suggestions.

              Cheers, Ed.

I own both a S50 z3M Coupe, and a S54 powered E46 M3. I think I prefer the noisy from the S54 over the 2, and I'd presume it's the same in the z3m powered S54, however in terms of enjoyment and feeling special the z3m wins hands down everytime.

Both S50 and S54 are tiny bit raspy but it's not the sound of an the E46 M3.

you can do a search on the forum for details of most cars that have been advertised for sale over the last couple of years and this will give you some idea of prices , ( I searched "new listing black" )

                    http://www.z3mcoupe.com/forum/search...earchid=834111

I would think there are more black S54 M Coupes out there than some of the numbers given

From the cars on this Forum's register 9 months ago, 16% were black and there were 4 out of 28 S54s were black: 14%. Given that there are circa 100 S54s left on the road in the UK, one would estimate about 15 of those to be black.

Then all you have to do is decide what colour interior you want!!

I own a Black S50 along with the other cars listed, in my signature, below, she is my daily driver, but she is very special & always a pleasure to drive!!
                      2000 Cosmos Black S50, Kyalami/Black interior, KW V3s, H&R ARBs, Supersprint exhausts, Apex ARC8s.
1996 Dark Aubergine Escort Cosworth Lux with leather, GGR 305 chipped, GGR/Koni suspension, Black Diamond discs.
                      2008 Orange/Black Westfield Megabusa, FW rear, Widetrack/Nitron Suspension, AP/Westfield 4 pots.
                      Lots of Land Rovers!
                      No wife or kids!!

The best way to find out is to drive one ;-)

The S50 is just as fun and sometimes its hard to justify the extra premium an S54 demands (I'm talking roady's here but assume its the same for the coupe's) but its nice to be in one of the rarest of BMW clubs

I drive some pretty exotic metal but my "fun" car is a Z3m and its gives more smiles per £ than anything I can think of.

Re the noise, the stock exhaust can sound a little underwhelming but my Eisenmans are overwhelming (almost as loud as the F430 in race mode) and there are plenty of tried and tested options in between to suit anyones needs

                          Black S54

I am of the same opinion as Trundler, there are a number of black s50's but the number of s54's I have always understood to be below 10.
regards Skeeter black s54 will be at stone on the big day!

Ok.... I get it.... it seems that I might have more than a struggle to find my perfect car :)

When you think about rare cars, I used to think about the F40. Its seems ironic that in fact there were over 1300 F40s made but in comparision, probably a lot less then 20 black s54 z3m coupes :)

Anyone want to sell me their csl

Makes the enjoyment when you get one even more knowing how rare they are.

I have one of only 4 Imola roady's and there is a bit of waiting list for them

I know people who took years to find one close the spec they wanted for an S54.

So you either need to get lucky, be patient or widen your scope ;-)
