I reckon it's because the M Cars generally look pretty good also, and most BMW LCI updates are pre-planned (like orange indicators on the early cars, despite clear being used for decades) to keep interest in the model.
Yea I think ASC is effectively a 2nd throttle that closes to block the air, but it's a bit slow to react then cuts all the power make the car lurch about. I think I read somewhere that it wasn't also suited for the S50 as it was too slow to respond.
