  • My top gear challenge ( sort of )

    Well not today. But yesterday
Long story short, part of the garage side involves car delivery/ collections (sometimes repossessions)
A regular customer asked my to collect a car from Italy
They agreed a price and that was it
Now for the long part of the story
Car belonged to said customers dad who at 70 decided to hook up with a 30 yr old Romanian tennis coach
They were living in his house in Marbella ( sounds like a dream way to die doesn't it? Hot country millions in the bank getting shagged to death)
Anyway the old guy gets cold feet and decides after 6 month to come home
Leaves the girlfriend in the flat with the car and says" stay 6 month when you leave post the keys through the door"

Anyway bird hooks up with an Italian drug dealer emptys the flat Knicks the car and heads to Italy
When they get to border they go through and are followed by police chase develops and car is surrounded by armed police
Guy is arrested and gets 18yr our customer gets call from police to say they have car
After much to Ing and fro Ing with solicitors court releases car.

I had a few spare days holiday from my day job so decided to go with my son for a road trip

We left ours at midnight Wednesday ( having both worked all day Wednesday)
With a bag of clothes and basic tools not knowing how long this would take or what car would be like
We took a cheap part ex (a £50 fiesta)
And headed to stanstead, 2 flights £88 and 2 hrs rather than £700 each and 3 changes from Newcastle
Dumped car in car park (never to be seen again )
And on the plane at 6am
    Lands
    Pick up hire car
Head to police station for release chatty on Turin
Except it wasn't Turin it was 40 miles away in Susa
( neither of us read Italian and there are 2 streets with same name in both towns)
Head back to Susa rocks up at police station 2 big blokes in shorts and T shirts expecting the long wait
Young police woman on desk ( what a beauty )
Says wait there. I thought here we go sat for ten mins, and I started googling for a local hotel as I expected to get fucked about
This bloke comes in and looks at us in a hoody and jeans and shaven head
We both clock him looking at us and we're ready for a kick off
He comes toward me I'm up like a shot, he sticks his hand out and introduces himself as local police chief
    And smiles.
Invites us into his office asks if we want coffee, and helps us fill all paperwork in, what a great bloke
The deputy them comes in and is great too
In an hour we are away to compound following the deputy
Gets there loads of Italian shouting and waving of hands and we are led to car
Loads of trim out where they have searched it but good nick
Car won't start so deputy phones his mate
Who comes over takes my son to a local breakers
    ( an obvious chop shop)
Gets battery and away we go
Drop off hire car and head north
Filled up with fuel and pizza and red bull
As all 3 are now running on empty
Drove through Italy 110 mph all way
Taking 2 hr stints at wheel and napping
Then through mont blank tunnel France up to Calais
We did the Turin to Calais in under 6 hrs including stopping for tolls (661 mile)
    Great fun

Got flashed loads of times from speed cameras
But guess what during the time in compound the plates had disappeared and we had no way of replacing them ( what a shame)
We got stopped at customs at Chunnel
As they didn't like look of us
But when they went to search car they just laughed
As all trim was out ready for search
Drove all the way home. And got pulled by a traffic car pulling into our street
    No number plates
    Is it your car. No
    Where have u been Turin
What happened to trim told him
Both had eyes like piss holes in the snow
Copper must have thought I've got a right pair of looneys here
Any ways told him the tail and he just laughed
And sent us on our ur way home
    Round the corner
Left at midnight Wednesday in bed for 9 am Friday
What a laugh we had and made a good few quid too
    Happy days

              Pete, been meaning to ask.

I met you years ago and you had your 'old' z3m coupe.

Did you end up buying the same one again ?

No I didn't buy my old one back again, I haven't seen anything of it since it went. I sold it to a fella from Bradford area who owned a garage business, who I don't think ever came on this site.
Using the old Reg No I've just looked on DVLA MOT & Road Tax sites and no sign of it. Love to know what happened to it.
Maybe its now on personal reg or has it gone to breadvan heaven!!!

It wasn't until after I bought it that I found out the "new" coupe was a totally identical specification to my old one and was 805 out of the 821 S50 run of cars.
