  • Front wheel bearing replacement

Anyone replaced their front wheel bearings? looks like lots of specialist tools used in the Bentley guide but sure it could be done with basis tools?

The only tool you may need is a small bearing puller to pull off the inner race from the hub shaft. Apart from that it is quite easy.

Remove wheel and brake disc/caliper/carrier out of the way.
Remove the dust cover from the hub, undo the big nut.
If you're lucky the whole lot will slide off but usually the bearing splits and leaves the inner side of the bearing on the stub. It can be tricky to access with a puller with the dust shield so close to that area without distorting the backplate.

May as well also renew the brake dust shields as the bolts are only accessible with the bearing/hub off.

Also buy some rear inner dust/covers ( (part no. 31206777788) which are tapped on to the kingping/spindle before you put the bearing/hub assembly back on.

I've replaced mine twice, the first time one had gone (went unnoticed for a while due to running R888s); I replaced bought with Febi-Bilstein from Eurocarparts, but more recently I changed as I was trying to cure constant brake judder (it wasn't hte bearings in the end!). I got a pair of off ebay.

great there are Meyle ones on ebay for £42 each or SKF at around £75, Febi at ECP are about £95 and BMW are wanting £180 each side - other than dealers which would you recommend?

Pretty sure the Febi-Bilstein which are OE used SKF bearings so the SKF-branded ones would be as good as it gets.

They Meyle ones were quite cheap, I was unsure about them as they are quite cheap but the Meyle brand is well regarded and not had any problems so far. Got them from BMWmotormec on ebay.
