Maybe I'm just being silly but back in the states services were no where near that much !

Anyone know of a good independent shop in Cornwall?

Just came across a very nice guy (Andrew) who has some good posts on E36 forums :)

That is stupid price! my local BMW Stealer where I used to work is about £350ish insp 1, £700 insp 2 normal prices. (Cotswold BMW)

Try and find a decent local indy on other BMW forums too.

I think there is no point taking it to a dealer and paying 2/3 times as much as a decent indy unless you want/must have the BMW stamp in the book and/or you have BMW warranty still running on the car (which is now pretty pointless anyway due to having huge excess's)

That is a scandalous price for a glorified oil change!

You should have told them they are well over priced, drank your free coffee, used their toilet facilities then left!

This comment threw me for a moment. I was under the impression that both Inspection 1 and Inspection 2 services included checking the valve tolerances... is that not the case, or is the difference here that we're referring to an S54 rather than an S50?

Interesting one that. I always thought it was only on in Inspection II but actually think it is both I and II where they should be checked and adjusted - whether or not they are is another question, hence my comment!

Is your Indy doing them on your Insp I Tony?

Only inspection 2 is shims, you should drop the car off day before so engine is stone cold to do them.

                      - think I may b wrong -

Just looked in my service manual and it says both - not sure if S50 is the same?

                          Found this--

                          Inspection 1:
The inspection one is a more in depth service, and is carried out as per BMW specifications. Some vehicles are required to be delivered to us the night before so that their engines are stone cold when worked upon.
                          Oil Change
                          Oil Filter Change
                          Microfilter Change*
                          Rocker Cover Gasket Change*
                          *Where applicable.

                          Inspection 2:
The inspecition 2 is the most in depth maintenance service available. Again, we only use BMW Lubricants and Parts in the service. We require all Inspection 2 customers to leave the car with us overnight, as the valve train must be stone cold when adjusted.

                          Oil & Filter Change
Castrol Edge / BMW Approved Oil
                          Rocker Cover Gasket Change
                          Microfilter Change
                          Spark / Glow Plugs*
                          Fuel Filter
                          Air Filter
                          BMW Approved Differential Oil
                          BMW Approved Gearbox Oil
                          *Where applicable.

They are indeed, Sir. And thankfully asked for the car to be delivered the day before. Always reassuring when they know that :)

I have a feeling that I may have read on here that the valve check at both I and II services wasn't always the case. Or maybe somebody mentioned it to me at Silverstone Classic. God, my memory gets worse by the day, lol
