  • Retrofit Cruise Control

I have a 2002 M Coupé, and recently retrofitted Cruise Control having read these discussions.

I discussed this with RussJ via email (he sent me the Instructions as a .pdf), and Simon in person at the Big Cheese, and both convinced me that it would be easy: which it was, apart from the fact that I am over six foot and 200 pounds, so I struggled a bit to squash into the driver footwell to get to some of the connectors.

I ordered just three parts from my local dealer
    B61.31.8.360.926     Switch               £50.64
    B61.31.1.390.968     Knob (English)    £ 2.73
    B65.71.8.380.054     Interface            £30.84
    Plus VAT of course                               £14.74
I foolishly forgot to ask for the Car Club discount, which would have saved 10%.

Total installation time just over 2 hours, which included looking for the right tools, finding a flashlight, etc. I followed the instructions closely, except that (as others have done) I cable-tied the interface box to the wiring harness.

Worked first time, I'm a very happy bunny

My thanks to all who did the spadework to find the Parts Lists and Intructions.

Sounds like a pretty easy retro-fit modification on the S54, I know my S50 with cruise has a box on the inner wing with a 2nd throttle cable that pushes and pulls the throttle open as required.

Thanks to the 'fly-by-wire' system and having the wiring harness and software already installed in the factory when the car was built, it was basically remove some panels, click the control stalk into place, connect some cables, reinstall the panels.

      Piece of cake

What about S50's with no fly by wire?

        Cruise would be nice 8)

I can't help there at all, but TonyCal has fitted non-BMW cruise control to his S50 M roadster… I don't know why he didn't try retrofitting BMW parts.

Here is his website, which contains a description for non-BMW kit.

Here is a discussion for BMW parts for 1997 2.8 M52.

            Rags

If you look on RealOEM.com in the Z3 section and go through the various groups till you get to the 66 20 cruise control group you can get the following listing of spares (prices in US$ - don't how that compares in real terms in UK). I thought about it earlier in the year but haven't taken it any further as yet.

            01 CONTROL UNIT F CRUISE CONTROL 1 65711387625 $415.15
            03 CRUISE CONTROL ACTUATOR 1 07/1996 65718369027 $229.90
            04 BRACKET F CRUISE CONTROL MOTOR OPERATOR 1 41148401744 $3.79
            06 HEX NUT WITH PLATE M5 3 07/1996 65718372353 $0.31
            07 BOWDEN CABLE F CRUISE CONTROL 1 65712228746 $30.13
            13 CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH 1 61318360926 $100.16
14 BUTTON FOR CRUISE CONTROL SWITCH (ENGLISH) 1 61311390968 $6.58

            Total about US$790

Anybody got time to investigate further? I'm currently overseas at the moment so not able to sort anything out.

There looks to be only the two common parts with the S54.

            B61.31.8.360.926 Switch £50.64
            B61.31.1.390.968 Knob (English) £ 2.73

Estimate it is going to cost in region of £350 to £400 for bits then fitting.

            Hope that helps
