  • airbag control unit - not responsive

Wonder if your collective wisdom could help? I had my airbag warning light on so had a specialist (airbagwarninglights or dashwarninglights) inspect it. Apparently the unit is "non communicative" which means dead in normal parlance...

I sent it off for a second opinion, which was the same.

Any suggestions on how/where to source a replacement?

if its the controller you need to replace I would think its the same as a e36 unit? have you a part number? ebay?

check on realoem as there may be different versions for s50's (early/late) and s54's.

Thanks for the assistance. I've got the part number. It's 65.77-8386192

Found this from US but not sure if it even works! (sold "AS IS")

looks like there are 2 types on realoem up to 04/99 and then after including s50 and s54 which I would imagine is single and double stage air bags. part numbers are different to yours 65778374799 and 65776908896 same as e36 compact.

I'm taking my airbag module out this week, hopefully today, does anyone know the location of the unit, i believe it is under/behind the centre console?

Yes it's behind the centre consold (lower gauges). It's kind of sat on the "tunnel"; if you carefully peel back one of t he sides you can see it. Whether this is enough to be able to remove it I'm not sure!

There was a thread on zroadster with a similar issue so itcould just be the control module as said.

My car has had no comms for a few years now (the whole car, not just certain modules so must be in the wiring from the port to the ecu) I need to have a proper look at it sometime!!

Just to confirm - unit sits behind the clock & temp dials. The side panels need to be peeled back, then the module unscrewed / unplugged. Did mine a while back, took 15 mins. Good luck!

Sorry to dig up an old thread, I need to check the supply voltage to my airbag control module, is there any precautions or a certain proceedure required? Can I simply unplug the module then turn key (without starting) to power up and test supply cable? There are some warnings to disconnect battery but obviously I need power to test supply!

                      Any answers out there?

                      Thanks,

                      Ben.

It will be fine to test voltages, the warning to disconnect the battery are only there as a safety precaution; you will only set the airbags off if you short or put power to the right (or wrong! ) wires! Just make sure that you know what wires you're playing with!!
