Not wanting to contradict posts..but as far as i know there is no need to strip the entire rear end out,,just the floor boards and the stuck down sound proofing...although to totaly strip the arse out dosnt take that long just really fidily..but not needed...and if you do why not do the rear topmounts aswell??? i have spoken to a welder this morning..and he sugests the seam welding and reinforcing route is the way to go..as there is so much torque produced putting strain on the piddly spot welds bmw use...i will keep you informed and pics once my car goes in Tuesday morning..Mel

I stripped mine out to avoid the risk of welding sparks burning the trim. Using welding blankets to cover the trim is another option and probably easier although there is still the risk of a stray spark.

What's the progress on this boot floor repair? I'm trying to find someone to fix mine at the moment but I'm fed up of being messed around. One BMW specialist who is recommended highly on Pistonheads insists on a whole new boot floor so is quoting me 2.5k for parts. A local one recommended quoted me 400-600, when I tried to book the car in a few weeks later they denied ever giving me the quote and said they wouldn't do the job. And a third specialist recommended to me has photos but is taking an AGE to give me a quote. This is all very annoying as I wanted the car sold by now as it's just sat on the driveway.

Quite a trek for you James, but I can recommend Emley Refinishers near Huddersfield. They've done some boot repairs for some of the roadster owners and some work on my MC and the standard is excellent.

I started stripping the noise insulation out of my boot at weekend - I still can't stand up straight So far, I've only done the passenger side (from back-to-front) and half way across to the front of the boot, but so far so good thankfully I might take the opportunity to get a few strengthening welds put in place while I have the sound insulation out though.

My car goes in tomorrow morning,so keeping my fingers crossed ive should him pictures of nearly all the suspect areas and he didnt seem stressed by it..i do know that we are talking about seam welding both sides and plates with holes in them and then filled??? sounded all complicated to me...but he seemed to be of the boot and braces type!!! will add tomorrow night!

Well the chap has looked and looked checked all pictures and yup usual suspected areas diff mount cracked seam on left hand side very flimsily spot welded etc...however i was suprised to see that the arb fixings are still sound! he was looking and muttering and his thought that the loose/cracked diff mount is what starts all the problems??? and is going to ""beef up" the bracket and seem weld the floor both sides etc...i will take some pictures tomorrow as he was about to remove the exhaust's and heat sheilds...noticed that i also have a broken rear spring, and a leaking power steering hose...it just gets bloody worse..but never mind will be fixed by tomorrow!!!

Least he is on the ball and spotting these things and it will be better for it - that's the positive way to look at it!

                  Mel,

Sorry to hear of your problems, it'll all be as good as new in the end

That leaking hose explains that noise you had from your steering the other week.

Good luck with it, it'll be one ticked off the worry list once it is done. At least you'll get your car back fairly soon doing it this way. When BMW did mine under good will they had the car for 4 1/2 months

BMW spot welds are a bit crap aren't they! The metal is also not thick enough for the loadings IMO. Loads of E46 M3s suffering now according to M3Cutters so even though that's an entirely different car it obviously has similar design principles of "just enough" strength to the rear structure. I'm surprised the E46 suffers as I always understood the diff on that to have it's own subframe, whereas ours has a direct mount/ear off the boot floor.

Go on I'll say it, told you so ;-)

The replacement diff hanger is a beefier piece of metal.

Not sure if your going to try and repair it but if you go for a replacement make sure you get the upgraded one as it has a different part number.

The hanger is slightly thicker, apparently the S54 had a tiny bit thicker bracket? Very little difference and I would high recommended some DIY to adapt a 2nd bracket to be welded over the original one to double it up.

Cheers Tony for the info on a garage willing to carry out the job. I'll keep it in mind but at the moment I'm so busy with work I can't find the time to drive the car to a garage, 93 hours last week! I'm almost tempted to trade the car in or just let it go cheap.
