Default S50 diagnostic fault code reader

I'm looking to purchase a device to read fault codes, at the moment I want to read a code linked to a flat alarm siren battery! Also want for future issues as I've only just purchased the car it will be a sound investment.
I already know about the old type 20 pin plug under Bonnet, what I want to know is there a modern reader on the market using a converter lead that works well which tells me everything I need to know?

Links would be useful

Cheers Paul

If you don't want to get stuck into inpa, a friend showed me Carly over the weekend. Very use lr friendly, it connects to the round pin and you control it on your phone. It allows you to do all sorts of funky stuff like coding
