    Well, I do not mean to say that you cannot use 10/60 for the S50 but the owner's manual of the S54 recommends 10/60 and the owner's manual of the S50 recommends 5/40 or 15/40...cannot recall for sure (I think the early BMWs with the S50 were recommended (owner's manual) to use 5/40...but I know those o use 10/60 for the S50...and some indies and bmw mechanics recommend it...

            i thought that the TWS / EDGE and RS branding of Castrol are all the same oil just the different names they have called it over the different years/countries

              No, originally it was Castrol TWS 10/60 at BMW dealers (and certain suppliers) and the general market Castrol RS 10/60.

              Now 10/60 RS is branded 10/60 Edge but the TWS version is 10/60 Edge "for M Series" (ie two different oils but same grade) but maybe still called TWS within BMW dealers.

                  hehe. Essentially there was and still are two blends of 10/60;

                  1. Castrol TWS and now aka Edge for M Series

                  and

                  2. Castrol RS now "Edge Sport"

                  What the differences are I'm not sure but it is enough for Castrol to package the two Edges different and designate one as "for M series".

                      For what your saving go for an OEM BMW filter, only talking about a couple of quid extra...

                        The price is not much, in any at some places.

                        Some infor here: http://www.cslregister.com/forum/showthread.php?p=57157

                        "The Edge 10w-60 has an ester content, which the Edge Sport doesn't and that makes the Edge a better choice for track use as it's a better lubricant and more stable at higher temps."

                            Yea that's about right. I usually put 5litres in then top it up after a short drive/perior for it to settle.

                              Does 10/60 result in higher operating temperatures in the S50? My car used to run at about 90 degrees. After the 10/60, 110 wasn't uncommon.

                                Yea I've noticed slightly higher temps, average 95/100 with 10/60, usually 90deg.
