  • Finally got one, door lock problem

Finally managed to complete a 4 year dream. Initially started looking in 2013, but ended up buying a 911. Now I've got one, but just wanted some clarity on a problem.

Drivers side door lock. When I lock and unlock using the key fob it doesn't open. I have to use a key. When I press the interior door pin both doors lock and unlock.

So would it be the actuator? If so is it the same as an e36?

Congratulations - which one did you buy?.

Actuators are well known to fail but could it be the key itself?

Thanks for that Dave, I've picked up Obicoke's Estoril Blue. Previously owned by Jules78.

It's currently at my BMW specialist in Leeds getting a full service(including valve clearance), diff/box oil changed. Clutch flexi pipe fitted and a new throttle cable fitted.

I made their day when I arrived in the Coupe. Work there ground to a halt when the coupe got there. One of the techs was smitten.

Should have it back in a few days.

Glad you managed to get sorted with purchasing a Coupe. You'll have to get to Silverstone next year for the Classic Car Weekend!!

Silverstone is a 3 hour drive. However it is the ZMC's anniversary so must make a big effort.

Greatly depends on what time of day you travel and whether you hit any traffic problems. Last two years I've left just after lunch time from Teesside and hit delays both times on the A1 & M1, meaning it took me over 4hrs 30mins each time. Going to leave a lot earlier on the Friday morning to try miss the traffic.
Hope to see you there at some at some point.

My money on the door lock/actuator problem says it's a broken wire.

The broken wire may not even be the one to that door (!) so check all three (3) as the hatch is part of that circuit too.

BMW did not spec an appropriate conductor for the wiring used in their harnesses; their's is__for any given ga-thickness__made up of fewer, larger diameter strands that resist repeated flexing.

Had they used conductors made of a greater number of smaller strands, they would be much more flexible. As an example, consider how stiff the wiring in your house's main electrical panels is, and then think about how flexible the large gauge welding machine wire is; the welder's cable is made of a great many thin strands.

You can take joy in the fact that it will only get worse
