  • Spark plug replacement

    Hi guys,

Going to replace my spark plugs myself. Going for NGK's 3641 laser platinum spark plugs PKR7A F.

Do I need to replace the rubber boot as well as the plug? I have hear some people say you dont need to and others say you should.

Thanks for the tip. I will be diving in soon as the various bits arrive. I'm not particularly good with cars but think I can probably manage this one. Looked at a few videos too :)

I think they meant the socket. Did you replace that?

              Finally getting around to it.

I thought I needed to set the spark plug gap. There is a picture on the spark plugs showing a screwdriver opening the gap with a cross through it. Is this saying dont reopen the plug gap or that it shouldn't be closed in the first place?

I also cant find the correct gap width. Does anyone have this?

              Thank you in advance

On an s54 (and probably s50) they use iridium plug and you would damage the electrode if you gapped it with a screwdriver. Any adjustment would need to be done by altering the ground plug only.

I am pretty sure they do not need adjusting from the factory setting assuming you are using the manufacturer approved plug.

Here is the picture. I went with the plugs as they were recommended in another thread. I thought you had to adjust the gap to the manufacturers recommendation (I bought the gap gauge and everything!).

When I did mine with original BMW PKR7A plugs I checked each one and confirmed they were set exactly correct straight out of the box which confirmed no adjustments required.

Thanks Ace. I was wondering if anyone new the correct spacing for the plug. I went with plug recommended on the forum but want to check the spacing is correct before I put them in.

0.7mm according to this data sheet on page 21 for the PKR7A plugs in the S50.

                          http://ngkntk.co.uk/wp-content/uploa...g_Cat_2016.pdf

S54 plugs are not listed presumably factory set.

                              Update -

So the plugs had oil in the top. Took the Z3 into the garage and suggested the valve cover gasket was leaking. Sure enough it was. Once replaced the car feels so much smoother :)
